Things Your Cake Vendor Wished You Knew
Ah sweet, delectable, wonderful cakes! We LOVE desserts here at Moonbeam Weddings and whether you are pro-cake or opt for an alternative dessert, there are certain factors you need to keep in mind when ordering your wedding day sweets. So, we spoke with one of our favorite bakers, Layered Cakes & Bakes about some cake tips and tricks. Read on for some sweet insight!
Cake Flavor - “Couples always ask what the most common wedding cake flavors are because they want their guests to be happy. The answer is ALWAYS 'Pick YOUR favorite flavor, it's your wedding, enjoy every detail about it."
Design - “Bring/email me your mood board during the initial consultation and tell us everything about it, the details, the flowers, the specific colors, the look you're going for, everything.” This helps your baker understand your wedding vision and work with it to help accentuate your theme.
Guest Count - “Have a general idea of how many guests you plan on attending. We know it's a planning stage, but we cannot provide a proper quote without that information.”
Additional Desserts - “If you want to do a dessert table, have a general idea of what types of desserts you'd like [and] plan on ordering 2-3 desserts per guest.”
On that note…we here at Moonbeam would suggest that you opt for 3-5 different desserts of varying flavors such as chocolate, sweet, spicy, zesty, etc. as well as varying shapes and heights for style purposes.
Frosting Choice - “When providing a cake design, be open-minded to fondant. Some cake designs can only be created with fondant.”
Moonbeam stepping in here again to mention that even if you opt for a simple fondant design, please understand that simple doesn’t always mean cost-effective. Incorporating a logo onto a plain white cake can eat up serious time for the baker!
Also, keep in mind that if you opt for buttercream frosting, you will need to keep the environment in mind otherwise, you may end up with a melted cake!
Restrictions - “If you or someone you know has allergies please let us know!”
Lastly, we want to say on behalf of all the bakers out there in the world. If you are planning on only having a small presentation cake with sheet cake for everyone else, try to order through your baker instead of the grocery store. Bakers pride themselves on taste and quality (It’s their bread and butter - food pun fully intended). No company would want its reputation tarnished by a guest associating their brand with a lesser/different product.
