Wedding DIY: Boutonnières
A boutonnière is a floral decoration, typically a single flower or bud, worn on the lapel of a tuxedo or suit jacket. While worn more frequently in the past, boutonnières are now usually reserved for special occasions where formal wear is standard, such as proms, homecomings, and weddings. However, in modern times, many couples are taking their boutonnières to the next level by adding feathers, twigs, fishing flies, or other ornamentation. Here is a step-by-step guide to making your own…
What You Need:
-Filler Flowers(or flower buds), Greens, and a Statement Flower
-Snips or Small Scissors
-Floral Tape
-Ribbon
-Flower Tubes (if using real flowers)
Step One:
Snip all florals and greens to about 4 inches long, removing all excess leaves on the lower 2 inches
Step Two:
Start by arranging the larger flat greens as your base, then top with your lighter filler flowers, and finally the statement flower. Make sure you pinch the stems tightly at the neck but gently (so you don’t crush the stems but also so you don’t loose control of the bunch) between your finger tips.
Step Three:
Take a 4 inch piece of floral tape, lightly stretched to “activate” the glue, and wrap tightly at the neck of the stems about four times. Tear off any excess tape.
Step Four:
Snip the stems at an angle so they all align and place in floral tube until wedding day.
If you are using fake florals or ornamentation, continue with tightly wrapping the stems in your choice of ribbon or string and secure. That’s it!
